Design and fabrication of subwavelength nanogratings based light-emitting diodes

Linearly polarized light from InGaN green light emitting diode grown on (0001) oriented sapphire is demonstrated by using subwavelength metallic nanogratings. Polarization ratio can reach 7:1 (∼88%), the highest ever reported from a single light emitting device. We discuss the design and fabrication of this device in detail.     

A universality theorem for ratios of random characteristic polynomials

We consider asymptotics of ratios of random characteristic polynomials associated with orthogonal polynomial ensembles. Under some natural conditions on the measure in the definition of the orthogonal polynomial ensemble we establish a universality limit for these ratios.     

Optimal boundary discretization by variational data assimilation

A variational data assimilation technique applied to the identification of the optimal discretization of interpolation operators and derivatives in the nodes adjacent to the boundary of the domain is discussed in frames of the linear shallow water model. The advantage of controlling the discretization of operators near the boundary rather than boundary conditions is shown. Assimilating data that have been produced by the same model on a finer grid, in a model on a coarse grid, we have shown that optimal discretization allows us to correct such errors of the numerical scheme as under‐resolved boundary layer and wrong wave velocity. Effect of thermal history on the deformation and failure of polyimides

Thermal‐processing structure‐property relationships for polyetherimide (PEI), poly(4,4′‐oxydiphenylene pyromellitimide) (POPPI), and phenylethynyl‐terminated imide (PETI‐5) composite matrices are reported from a fundamental perspective. For thermoplastic PEI, deformation and failure depend primarily on free volume as evidenced by moisture‐absorption, mechanical‐property, and mass‐density changes as a function of annealing. The deformation of POPPI can be divided into the following three regimes as a function of annealing temperature: (1) physical aging‐induced glassy state free‐volume decreases, (2) thermally activated microvoid collapse, and (3) chemical degradation. In the case of PETI‐5, macroscopic defects, free volume, and polymer morphology control deformation. The effects of residual crystallinity on deformation are reported, and it is shown that mechanical toughness can be significantly decreased upon annealing below the glass‐transition temperature. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
